WHY JEDDAH

Saudi Arabia's gateway to the world

Jeddah has served as the commercial and cultural gateway of the Arabian Peninsula for centuries — a trading port where the influences of Africa, Asia, and the Arab world converge along the Red Sea coast. As Saudi Arabia's second-largest city and its most internationally open, Jeddah offers a distinctly different character from Riyadh — more relaxed in atmosphere, deeply rooted in a merchant trading culture, and increasingly dynamic as a centre of arts, entertainment, and economic activity under Vision 2030.

Saudi Arabia's commercial hub

The Kingdom's leading port city and a major centre of private sector commerce, trade, and manufacturing — home to some of Saudi Arabia's most significant family business conglomerates and regional trading enterprises.

Red Sea gateway

Saudi Arabia's principal port city and the traditional gateway to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah — a city of profound historical, religious, and commercial significance in the Muslim world.

Well connected

King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) offers direct flights from London, Dubai, Nairobi, Lagos, Accra, Addis Ababa, and across Africa and the GCC via Saudia and international carriers.

Arts & culture capita

Jeddah has emerged as Saudi Arabia's most vibrant arts, culture, and entertainment destination under Vision 2030 — with galleries, festivals, and a thriving creative scene unlike any other city in the Kingdom.

CULTURE & ATTRACTIONS

Beyond the classroom

Jeddah offers delegates an extraordinary range of cultural and natural experiences — from the ancient coral-stone architecture of Al-Balad to the world-record-breaking King Fahd Fountain and the pristine coral reefs of the Red Sea, all within easy reach of any training venue.

The world's tallest fountain — shooting water 312 metres into the air above the Red Sea. Visible from across the city and most spectacular when illuminated at night. One of the most iconic landmarks in the Gulf region

Topkapi Palace

The administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire for four centuries. The palace complex houses the Imperial Treasury, the Sacred Relics collection, and extraordinary collections of Ottoman art and artefacts — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A major waterfront entertainment complex — ice rink, theme park rides, and a lively family atmosphere. A flagship of Jeddah's expanding entertainment landscape under Vision 2030.

Red Sea Mall & Tahlia

Red Sea coral reefs

WEATHER

What to expect throughout the year

Jeddah has a hot desert coastal climate — warm and humid year-round given its Red Sea location. Unlike Riyadh's dry interior heat, Jeddah's humidity makes summer months feel more intense. The cooler months from November to March offer the most comfortable conditions for training and Corniche exploration.

Dress Code Guidance

Recommended Attire

Context

Training sessions

Smart business or business casual attire. Venues are strongly air-conditioned — a light layer is advisable for indoor sessions throughout the year. Business dress is the expected standard in Jeddah's professional environment.

Outdoor exploration

Light, breathable clothing recommended outside of the cooler winter months. Modest dress is respectful throughout the city. Comfortable footwear essential for Al-Balad's uneven streets and the Corniche. Sun protection strongly advisable year-round given the intense coastal UV levels.

GETTING AROUND

Navigating the city

Jeddah is a large city best navigated by taxi or ride-hailing service. The Haramain High Speed Railway connects Jeddah to Makkah and Madinah. Ride-hailing services are widely available and the most practical option for delegates navigating between hotels, training venues, and attractions.

Deatils

Taxis & ride-hailing

Uber and Careem are the most widely used transport options for delegates in Jeddah. Both operate extensively throughout the city. Ride-hailing is strongly recommended for convenience and reliability — particularly for journeys between the Corniche, Al-Balad, and business districts along different stretches of the coastal city.

Airport connections

King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) is approximately 19 kilometres north of the city centre — approximately 25-40 minutes by taxi or Uber. The airport is modern and well-organised. Private transfer services are available from all major hotels.

Haramain High Speed

Railway

The Haramain Express connects Jeddah to King Abdullah Economic City, Makkah, and Madinah at speeds of up to 300 km/h. The Jeddah King Abdulaziz station is the principal terminus. Highly relevant for delegates travelling between Jeddah and other Saudi cities along the western corridor.

Car hire

Widely available at the airport and from established operators throughout the city. Recommended for delegates exploring Al-Balad, the Corniche, and the wider Jeddah area independently. All major international hire companies are at King Abdulaziz International Airport. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road.

Walking

Al-Balad and the Corniche promenade are pleasant to explore on foot during the cooler months of November through March — particularly in the evenings when the Corniche comes alive. During summer, outdoor walking during daytime hours is strongly discouraged — ride-hailing recommended from May through October.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you arrive

Key practical details to help delegates from across Africa, Asia, and beyond prepare for a comfortable and productive visit to Jeddah.

Topic

Information

Currency

Saudi Riyal (SAR). Contactless and card payments are widely accepted at hotels, shopping centres, and most restaurants. Carrying a modest amount of cash is useful for smaller establishments and markets. ATMs are available at the airport, major malls, and throughout the city.

Time Zone

AST (UTC+3) year-round — Saudi Arabia does not observe daylight saving time. Jeddah is on the same time as Riyadh, Nairobi, and Doha. It is 1 hour behind Dubai, and 3 hours ahead of London in winter.

Electricity

As a city in Saudi Arabia, halal food is universal across all restaurants and establishments. Jeddah is particularly renowned for its Red Sea seafood — fish, prawns, and lobster are a celebrated feature of the city's culinary culture. International cuisines are widely available along the Corniche and Tahlia Street.

Halal Dining

As a majority-Muslim city, halal food is the standard across virtually all of Istanbul's restaurants and food establishments. The city's cuisine — from traditional Turkish kebabs and mezes to international options — is widely considered among the finest in the world and is almost universally halal-certified.

Places of Worship

Mosques are found throughout Jeddah — the call to prayer is heard five times daily and Friday is the official day of rest. Non-Muslim delegates are welcome and respected. Private worship by non-Muslims is permitted; public worship by non-Muslims is not. Most international hotels provide a quiet space for private prayer on request

Cultural

Considerations

Jeddah is generally considered the most relaxed and cosmopolitan of Saudi Arabia's major cities. Modest dress is still expected throughout the city. During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours should be avoided out of respect. Friday and Saturday are the weekend; business runs Sunday through Thursday.
