What to expect
Altstadt (Old Town)
Zurich's beautifully preserved medieval quarter on both banks of the Limmat River — the Grossmunster and Fraumunster churches, the narrow Niederdorf lanes, the Lindenhugel hilltop, and the historic guild houses together create one of the most atmospheric medieval city centres in Switzerland.
Kunsthaus Zurich
One of Switzerland's finest art museums — recently expanded to become the largest art museum in the country, housing an outstanding collection of Swiss, European, and international art from the medieval period to the contemporary. Free on Wednesdays.
Lake Zurich & Quaianlagen
The magnificent 40-kilometre lake at the heart of the city — the lakeside promenade from Burkliplatz to Mythenquai is one of the finest urban lakeside walks in Europe, with the snow-capped Alps visible on clear days. Lake swimming in summer is a beloved Zurich tradition.
Swiss National Museum
Housed in a magnificent neo-Gothic castle adjacent to the main railway station — the Swiss National Museum traces the cultural history of Switzerland from prehistoric times to the present day through outstanding collections of applied arts, furniture, and historical artefacts.
Bahnhofstrasse
One of the world's most prestigious shopping boulevards — a 1.4-kilometre street connecting Zurich Hauptbahnhof to Lake Zurich, lined with flagship stores of every major luxury brand and anchored by the legendary Sprüngli confectionery establishment. A defining symbol of Zurich's wealth and sophistication.
Uetliberg Mountain
Zurich's local mountain — accessible by direct train from the city centre in 20 minutes, rising to 870 metres with panoramic views across Zurich, Lake Zurich, and the Alps on clear days. A magnificent half-day excursion requiring no special equipment at any time of year.
Lucerne (excursion)
Approximately 50 minutes from Zurich by direct train — the medieval city of Lucerne, with its famous covered wooden bridge (Kapellbrücke), Lion Monument, and spectacular position on Lake Lucerne surrounded by the Alps. Consistently rated one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland and an excellent day excursion.
Jungfrau Region (excursion)
Approximately 2 hours from Zurich — the Bernese Oberland's extraordinary Alpine landscapes, including the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe at 3,454 metres), the Eiger North Face, and the Lauterbrunnen valley. One of the most spectacular natural environments accessible from any city in the portfolio.

Zurich has a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and sunny; winters are cold with snow common from December through February. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for combining professional training with city and lake exploration.

Smart business or casual attire. Zurich's professional culture is notably formal and presentation-conscious — delegates are encouraged to dress smartly and conservatively, particularly in financial sector settings. Venues are well air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter.

Comfortable walking shoes recommended — Zurich's Old Town is hilly and cobbled. A warm, windproof jacket is advisable from October through April. Light layers work well in summer. A compact umbrella is useful year-round given occasional Alpine showers.

S-Bahn suburban rail
The S-Bahn network connects Zurich to the wider canton and surrounding cities — Lucerne, Basel, Bern, and Winterthur are all within 30-60 minutes. Particularly practical for delegates wishing to visit Lucerne or the Jungfrau Region as day excursions from a Zurich base.
Taxis & ride-hailing
Uber operates in Zurich. Official taxis are metered and available throughout the city — note that Swiss taxis are among the most expensive in Europe. For most delegates, the excellent public transport network makes taxis unnecessary for everyday city journeys. Taxis are most practical for late-night travel and airport journeys with heavy luggage.
Walking
The Altstadt, Bahnhofstrasse, lakeside promenade, and city centre are all highly walkable and reward extensive exploration on foot. Zurich is exceptionally safe and delegates can navigate independently at any hour with complete confidence. The walk from the Old Town along the Limmat River to Lake Zurich is one of the finest short urban walks in Switzerland.

Currency
Swiss Franc (CHF). Zurich is one of the most expensive cities in the world — delegates should budget accordingly. Contactless and card payments are universally accepted. Euros are occasionally accepted at major establishments but change is given in Swiss Francs. ATMs are available at the airport, at Zurich Hauptbahnhof, and throughout the city centre.
Time Zone
CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) in summer. Zurich keeps the same time as Geneva, Paris, and Brussels — 2 hours behind Riyadh, 3 hours behind Dubai, 2 hours behind Nairobi, and 1 hour ahead of London in winter.
Electricity
Type J plug (three round pins in a triangular arrangement — unique to Switzerland), 230V / 50Hz. The Swiss plug is different from the standard European Type C/F plug. All delegates will require a Swiss travel adaptor or a universal adaptor. Available at Zurich Airport and throughout the city.
Halal Dining
Zurich has a growing and increasingly well-established halal food scene. Halal-certified restaurants are available throughout the city, with a particularly strong concentration in the Langstrasse and Kreis 4 and Kreis 5 areas, as well as near the main station. Turkish, Arabic, South Asian, and international halal options are available near major training venues and hotels.
Places of Worship
The Islamic Centre of Zurich in Manegg and several other mosques and prayer facilities serve the city's Muslim community. A Qibla direction indicator is available on request at most international hotels. Muslim delegates are advised that the Muslim Pro app provides accurate prayer times and Qibla direction worldwide. Christian delegates are very well served — Zurich has a rich Protestant heritage as the home of Huldrych Zwingli's Reformation, with the Grossmunster and Fraumunster churches as its most celebrated places of worship, alongside Catholic and international churches throughout the city.
Language
German (Swiss German dialect in daily speech, High German in formal contexts) is the official language of Zurich. English is very widely spoken in hotels, financial institutions, business settings, and throughout central Zurich — delegates will encounter no meaningful language barrier in professional environments.
