GETTING AROUND

Navigating the city

Houston is a car-centric city. However, taxis, ride-hailing services, and the METRORail light rail system make it straightforward to navigate between the airport, hotels, training venues, and key attractions.

Airport connections

George Bush Intercontinental (IAH): Uber, Lyft, and taxis readily available — approximately 35–45 minutes to Downtown. William P. Hobby Airport (HOU): approximately 20–25 minutes to Downtown. Airport shuttles serve major hotels from both airports.

METRORail light rail

Three lines connecting Downtown Houston to the Museum District, Medical Center, and NRG Stadium. Useful for delegates staying downtown and visiting the Museum District. Accepts METRO Q Fare Card or contactless payment.

Taxis & ride-hailing

Uber and Lyft are the primary means of getting around Houston for most visitors. Both operate extensively throughout the city and to all major venues and attractions. Car hire is also a practical option for delegates wishing to explore independently.

Bus network

METRO operates an extensive bus network across Houston. Accepts the METRO Q Fare Card. Recommended primarily as a secondary option — ride-hailing is more practical for first-time visitors.

Car hire

Recommended for delegates wishing to visit the Energy Corridor, NASA Johnson Space Center, Kemah Boardwalk, or Galveston Island. Major international hire companies are all represented at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you arrive

Key practical details to help delegates from across the GCC, Africa, and Asia prepare for a comfortable and productive visit to Houston.

Topic

Information

Currency

US Dollar (USD). Card and contactless payments are universally accepted. Cash is rarely necessary but ATMs are widely available. Tipping is customary — 10–15% is standard in service settings.

Time Zone

CST (UTC-6) in winter and CDT (UTC-5) in summer. Houston is 9 hours behind Riyadh, 10 hours behind Dubai, 9 hours behind Nairobi, and 6 hours behind London in winter.

Electricity

Type A and B plugs (two flat pins), 120V / 60Hz. Delegates from the GCC, Africa, Europe, and Asia will require a US travel adaptor. A voltage converter may be needed for devices not rated for 110-240V.

Halal Dining

Houston has a well-established halal food scene. Halal-certified restaurants are found throughout the city, with a strong concentration along Hillcroft Avenue — known locally as the International Corridor — in Southwest Houston.

Places of Worship

Houston has a large Muslim community and numerous mosques, including the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, one of the largest mosque complexes in North America. A Qibla direction indicator is available on request at most international hotels. Muslim delegates are advised that the Muslim Pro app provides accurate prayer times and Qibla direction worldwide. Christian delegates are well served — hundreds of churches of every denomination exist across the city.
